What does a full-service design agency actually do?
A full-service design agency covers the complete range of brand and digital work: positioning, visual identity, website design and development, UX, and ongoing creative production. For climate and deep-tech startups specifically, this means one partner who already understands your technology, your market, and your audiences, without you needing to explain what carbon utilization is or why grid modernization is a hard sell. Rather than briefing separate vendors for strategy, brand, and web, you work with a single team that holds the full context across all of it.
How much does working with What if Design cost?
Pricing depends on the scope and engagement model. Project-based work, such as a brand identity build or a full website, is scoped and priced before any work begins, with fixed timelines and fixed deliverables. Embedded partnership engagements run on a monthly basis and scale based on your output needs. What if Design is structured to be accessible for Seed-stage companies while delivering the strategic depth that Series A and B teams expect. Reach out and we'll give you a clear picture of what a project at your stage typically looks like.
What industries do you work with?
We work exclusively with US-based climate and deep-tech startups, typically from Seed through Series B. That includes carbon capture and utilization, renewable energy, grid modernization, clean energy infrastructure, hydrogen, fleet safety, circular economy, and heavy industry decarbonization. We also work with climate and energy software companies: carbon accounting platforms, ESG reporting tools, grid analytics software, and similar products where translating technical complexity into buyer-friendly messaging is the central challenge.
How long does a typical project take?
A full brand identity typically takes three to four weeks. A complete brand plus website build usually runs six to ten weeks depending on scope and revision cycles. For startups with hard deadlines — a conference, a fundraising announcement, a product launch — we structure engagements around those dates. We set timelines before any work begins and hold to them.
Where are your clients based?
We work primarily with US-based startups, which is where most of our climate and deep-tech focus is concentrated. Our team operates across San Francisco and Bangalore, and we work fully remotely with all clients. If you're a climate or deep-tech company based in the US, geography isn't a barrier to getting started.
What makes What if Design different from other agencies?
Most design agencies need weeks of onboarding before they can contribute meaningfully to a climate or deep-tech project. We don't, because we work exclusively in this space. We've read the technical whitepapers, understand the regulatory context, and can engage with your technology without a science lesson first. That familiarity means faster execution, fewer misaligned drafts, and a final product that reflects how your industry actually works. We also prioritize strategy before visuals: every project starts with positioning and messaging alignment, not a mood board.
Can you work alongside our existing team?
Yes. Most of our clients bring us in to work alongside their founders, marketing leads, or internal teams. We adapt to your workflows, join sprint cycles, work within your existing tools, and attend key stakeholder sessions where needed. For companies at Series A and above that don't yet have a full in-house design function, we often operate as that function on an ongoing basis.
What do we actually deliver?
Deliverables depend on the engagement type, but typically include brand guidelines with logo systems and asset libraries, fully designed and built websites with CMS access, wireframes and hi-fidelity designs for digital products, pitch deck and presentation templates, and marketing collateral. Everything is handed off production-ready, with source files, usage documentation, and onboarding support to get it live and in use.
